TCU's Department of Environmental Sciences partnered with the Fort Worth Botanic Garden for Environmental Science Education Family Day, a free event designed to engage the public in interactive learning about local ecosystems and environmental conservation efforts.

Lauren Trotter, a senior Environmental & Sustainability Sciences student at TCU, has raised money to plant more trees on TCU campus and organized a donation drive during move out to donate items. Trotter has worked as representative of sustainability related initiatives for the College of Science & Engineering in the Student Government Associated (SGA) since the fall of 2021. The last two years of her undergrad, Trotter advocated for improvement of sustainability at TCU.

There was some big news this month in the College of Science & Engineering. TCU’s Department of Environmental Sciences was officially renamed the Department of Environmental and Sustainability Sciences.

It’s been 10 years since Victoria Bennett, associate professor in the Environmental Sciences department, launched TCU’s Bat Monitoring Program. After a decade of raising public awareness for bats and managing one of the first long-term studies to monitor bat populations in Texas, Bennett explains why there is no reason to fear bats and helps us understand the ecological services they provide.

TCU is involved in conservation and preservation efforts. This Earth Day, we look back at stories on how the College of Science & Engineering is making an impact, both locally and globally.

The dust has barely settled on COP26, the UN’s latest conference on climate change. Heads-of-state, negotiators, climate scientists, government representatives, businesses, and a host of other interested parties, gathered in Glasgow for 12 days to assess the state of the world’s climate and, more importantly, to lay out their commitments to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Michael Slattery, director of TCU's Institute for Environmental Studies, appears in the latest episode of EarthXTV's "Kids in Conservation." Ten-year-old hostess, Brooke Carter, visits the Amakhala Game Reserve with Slattery and learns about rhino conservation, as well as TCU's part in saving the species.

In a reception on Monday at Brown-Lupton University Union, renowned Western artist, Woodrow Blagg, unveiled his massive mixed-graphite drawing, “The Rescue.” It masterfully captures a team of TCU students on the Amakhala Game Reserve assisting in rhino procedures performed by South African wildlife vet, Will Fowlds. The 16-foot, hyper-realistic artwork was commissioned by TCU Alumn Larry Brogdon after a trip to South Africa where he had a life-changing rhino experience.

America’s first-ever museum dedicated exclusively to the environment could find a home in Fort Worth thanks to local community leaders in research, science, and education, as well as established business owners and entrepreneurs. Professor Becky Johnson is an EcoPlex advisory council member. She teaches several courses focused on the environment at TCU, and she believes that Fort Worth is already leading the change when it comes to water treatment and recycling programs.
