Second-year biochemistry student Tatum K. Harvey recently attended the American Chemical Society (ACS) Leadership Institute in Atlanta and shared her invaluable experience.

TCU’s organic laboratory course “Organic Qualitative Analysis,” a department capstone lab, might very well be renamed “Chemistry Detectives.” This is a fun twist on discovering and identifying unknown chemical compounds using deduction and reasoning.

Several incoming TCU students are receiving their basic training this month at Chemistry Boot Camp, which was launched in the summer of 2020 to provide a low-stress introduction to General Chemistry.

Recognizing a lack of emphasis on alternative energies in K-12 curricula, the University of Cambridge developed the “Primary School Energy Mapping Challenge.” TCU Chemistry Club has partnered with this initiative to help local elementary schools implement and investigate the benefits of renewable energy, assist in calculating the financial benefits of solar panels over a span of multiple years, and to help young students use proper design and debating skills to persuade the decision makers of Texas into investing in renewable energy.

Kayla Green, associate professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at TCU, conducts research that could lead to a greater understanding and treatment of Alzheimer’s. She answers questions about recent scientific breakthroughs.

TCU’s Chemistry Club has received an “Outstanding” rating along with the Green Chemistry Award for the 2020-2021 academic year from the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Associate professor of chemistry, Kayla Green, Ph.D., received a $240,000 award from The Welch Foundation in June. As one of the nation’s largest private funding sources for fundamental chemical research at universities, colleges, and other education institutions in Texas, The Welch Foundation granted funding of more than $23 million for 2021.

Robert Hugh Neilson (Bob) passed away on December 17, 2020 after a seven month battle with glioblastoma. He was born on January 24, 1948 and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. As he grew older, his early boredom with school turned into a career in education and research. Neilson attended Carnegie Mellon University where he majored in chemistry and was a part of the Army ROTC program.
